5 DIY Wedding Planning Mistakes + Our Advice

In the world of the wedding industry, you see a lot of things go right…and some other things go not as right.

It all boils down to being as prepared as possible and knowing who’s in charge of what on the big day. (HINT: the answer should not be the bride!)

don’t get us wrong, we love a good diy moment, but these 5 things are worth the extra time and investment. Trust us.

1. Don’t DIY Your Wedding Flowers

Here’s the rub: you can’t prep your wedding or rehearsal dinner flowers until the day of or the day before. Wedding flowers are a time-sensitive decor item that, even IF a bride feels they can handle on their own, takes away from more important moments.

If you are the bride, you don’t (or shouldn’t) have time for this.

You’re about to get married… We believe your task list should read “getting your nails done,” “spending time with family,” and “drinking mimosas.” 💅

2. Don’t Put Set-Up and Breakdown On Your Friends and Family

^^Read it again!!!

There’s nothing’s worse than having to switch into clean-up mode after a night of drinking, dancing, and fun. Your guests and family are tired… This puts the biggest damper on any party.

Please don't ask that of your family and friends. Let them enjoy your day with you! It’s a celebration for them, too.

3. A Playlist and a DJ Are NOT the Same

Get a DJ or a live band - it’s more than music!

With just a playlist, you're missing out on the structure and organization of someone with a microphone. The job of the DJ is to emcee the evening, help guests understand the timeline and flow, and avoid those awkward moments when your guests are unsure of what’s going on.

A Spotify playlist is good for your dinner party… NOT your wedding dance floor.

Don't make a playlist. Don't make a playlist. Don't make a playlist.

4. Never DIY Your Own Seating Chart

This one surprises most brides trying to DIY and be involved in as much as they can. Similar to DIY flowers, a seating chart can’t really be done until the week of.

Girl….no.

Hire a wedding planner (for many many many other reasons as well!) or find a trusted friend or family member to put everyone where they need to go.

Your friends can easily knock this out for you…

5. Decision-Making is Not a Good Decision

There needs to be a point before your wedding day when you stop planning and start being present.

If you're still making decisions, you're still stuck in the planning period!

Sometimes last-minute decisions have to be made because of weather, or a number of other things. Pick someone that you fully trust to make those decisions for you - someone you know would make the same choice you would.

Your wedding day is your time to love every moment and pass the details off to someone else.

The bottom line is: We want you to have everything in place so that you can truly sit back and enjoy all of your once-in-a-lifetime moments.

That doesn’t mean you can’t still have a budget - it can be as easy as appointing a trusted friend and letting them carry the load for you.

Just make sure you have someone keeping you accountable for being present on your big day.
